2024 Pond and Road Restoration Project

Our convent and retreat house property has a retention pond which helps with water control and drainage. Over the years the pond and the road that runs around it suffered damage from erosion caused by the quantity and speed of storm water that entered it. From January to May of 2024 our pond received much needed restoration, and our road was shored up, enabling it to withstand the occasional torrential downpours characteristic of Alabama summers.

Erosion caused by periodic flooding.
An example of how high the pond can get during a storm due to the speed and amount of water that comes into our property. Storms like this took their toll on the road which runs around the pond.

To correct the erosion issue, a wall was built along a large part of the pond. We also took the opportunity to dredge a large quantity of silt and install new drainage pipes.

Here are several videos which illustrate how well the new drainage has functioned during and after storms.

Due to generous donations and the tireless work of a faithful few, the pond is not only functioning as it ought, but it has become a beautiful place to enjoy. Thank you for helping us to continue to maintain and improve our convent and retreat grounds!
