Building: Past, Present and Future

Initial Construction

We built the first stage of Casa Maria from 1993-1996, and added on additions in 1998, 2000, 2005, and 2009. We remember the incredible generosity of so many volunteers and hardworking associates! This work was overseen by Sister Mary John Paul – a general contractor – and all the Sisters contributed.

    • Ongoing Projects

    After 30 years, there are repairs and improvements needed at Casa Maria. Some projects are focused on the building structure, while others involve landscaping. The regular torrential winter rains in Birmingham, combined with our property’s topography, are a challenge to manage! When we built the first stages of Casa Maria, the Sisters and volunteers were the only landscaping team on the property!

    Future Construction

    We have yet to build our final Chapel and two large wings at the end of the courtyard. Looking forward, we want to ensure we can maintain any new space(s) before we start on future expansions. Since we know that this final stage will double the square footage of Casa Maria, we will be planning carefully, both architecturally and financially, before beginning this last stage.
